Chase Daniel’s earnings under magnifying glass after Cam Newton signs with Patriots

The name of former Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel was trending Monday on Twitter thanks to Cam Newton.

The New England Patriots signed Newton, who in 2015 won the NFL MVP award and helped the Panthers reach Super Bowl 50 after they had a 15-1 regular-season record, signed an incentive-laden contract could be worth $7.5 million.

Monday Morning Quarterback columnist Andrew Brandt guessed that Newton’s deal includes only roughly $1 million guaranteed.

San Francisco 49ers defensive back Richard Sherman was not happy with the value of Newton’s contract:

People began comparing Newton to Daniel, the former Mizzou quarterback who received a three-year, $13.05 million deal with the Detroit Lions earlier this year to be a backup.

That’s a role Daniel knows well as he has appeared in 65 career games over 10 seasons and made five starts. He’s thrown seven touchdown passes and five interceptions total during that time.

The deal with the Lions adds to a lucrative career for Daniel as KCSP’s Carrington Harrison noted:

A Twitter user broke down Daniel’s career earnings:

Bleacher Report’s Adam Lefkoe compared Daniel’s deal to Newton and Jameis Winston, who threw for 5,109 yards last season and joined the Saints on a $952,000 deal:

But a closer look shows Daniel will make slightly less than those two:
