The NFL Draft will be held next month as planned but with a twist

With the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advising that no public events involving more than 50 people be held to slow the spread of COVID-19, the NFL said it would hold its draft next month in Las Vegas.

All public events surrounding the draft have been canceled, however.

The NFL announced the selection of players will still take place on April 23-25.

The league said it is “exploring innovative options for how the process will be conducted and will provide that information as it becomes available. The selection process will be televised.”

“This decision reflects our foremost priority — the health and safety of all fans and citizens,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “While this outcome is disappointing both to the NFL and to the Las Vegas community, we look forward to partnering with the Raiders, the City of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority for a future NFL Draft as well as evaluating opportunities for other major NFL events in Las Vegas in the future, including the Super Bowl.”

The NFL’s news came after a number of resorts in Las Vegas announced they will close because of the coronavirus pandemic.
