Myrtle Beach’s Galloway continuing overseas basketball career with eye on coaching
Trello Galloway has gotten used to being a coach on the court.
Turns out, doing it from the sidelines could be in his future.
The Myrtle Beach native and veteran of overseas basketball just completed another season in Bahrein, helping a young team (Ettihad) finish sixth in its division after being projected to finish last in the 14-team field.
While he says he played well, one thing was different this year.
“I took on a bigger role because I played on a team with a lot of younger guys so I had to lead,” said Galloway, who was helping out with the annual youth basketball camp held by his close friend, Ramon Sessions, at Myrtle Beach High School. “But that’s stuff I enjoy doing. It made me really have to coach on the floor. It really opened my eyes to my passion for coaching. It was good. In my next couple years now I think I’ll look to take on more of those kind of roles – teams that I can help bring up.
“Don’t get me wrong, though, if the top teams come calling me, I’m sold.”
He said he’s making moves to potentially lead him into a coaching role when his playing career is over.
“I’ve already started reaching out to a few contacts, getting some insight on the things I need to be doing and should be doing,” said Galloway, 36. “And it’s really putting my contacts in order so that when I am done I can reach out there to a few people who can possibly help me.”
Galloway has kicked around the idea of retiring in recent years, but he said he’s not ready to hang it up just yet despite the obstacles.
“Being there now is a lot harder than it was four or five years ago. Being away now is a lot harder,” he said. “My kids are getting older. My parents are getting older. Everything about life away from there is moving on without you, so you start to realize you’re missing out on a lot of different things. That’s the sacrifice you make. That’s what comes with it.”
Galloway said his body felt “surprisingly good” last season and he plans to keep doing what he believes he was put on this earth to do.
“It’s just a sign saying ‘I’ll keep blessing you if you keep doing it,’” he said. “I love the game. I love the competition aspect.”
