The New York Knicks struck out in the Kyrie Irving sweepstakes this summer.

However, they may have a player who could develop into a similar type of force if you trust Ramon Sessions’ ability to evaluate young talent.

The Myrtle Beach native recently told The New York Post the following when asked about Knicks first-round draft pick Frank Ntilikina:

“It’s funny,” Sessions said in his first remarks since signing with the Knicks. “It’s one of those things. I played with Jonny when he was younger. Kyrie when he was young. He’s got a lot of Kyrie tendencies. Not the most athletic guy but can handle the ball in tight spots. It’s still early on, but he definitely gives me that Kyrie feel when Kyrie was a rookie.”

Sessions’ reference of “Jonny” was for former NBA player Jonny Flynn, whom he was teammates with in Minnesota. During Irving’s rookie year, Sessions was also on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster.

Ntilikina was flattered by the comparison and gave credit to Sessions for his mentorship.

“Kyrie is Kyrie,” Ntilikina told The Post. “That’s something. He’s an All-Star, has done crazy things. Hearing that is a blessing. Ramon is here for me. Giving me a lot of advice. I’m learning a lot from him.”

The Knicks drafted Ntilikina with the eight pick in the draft this summer. Sessions, going into his 11th season, signed a one-year deal with the team at the veteran’s minimum of $2.3 million.
