Final score

Carolina Mudcats 8, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 6 (Box score)

Turning point

With five runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a Jordan Edgerton three-run home run, Carolina got out to an 8-4 lead and put away the Pelicans for the win.

Not done yet

Myrtle Beach outfielder Charcer Burks – who is having a phenomenal month at the plate – hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to bring the Pelicans within two runs but that was as close as they would get as the Mudcats shut the door in the ninth.

The man

Edgerton, who reached base each time he got to the plate as he went 4-for-4, drove in four runs and drew a walk.

Solid debuts

Taking the spots on Myrtle Beach’s roster that were vacated by top prospect Gleyber Torres and stud center fielder Rashad Crawford, who were both included in a trade by the Chicago Cubs in which they acquired Arolids Chapman from the New York Yankees, outfielder Donnie Dewees and infielder Bryant Flete both played their first game at the High-A level.

They did not disappoint, going a combined 5-for-8 at the plate. Flete hit a triple in his first at-bat to drive in a run, and later scored on a Charcer Burks single as he finished 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI, and also drew a walk. Dewees was 2-for-4 with two singles and drew a walk as well.

How long?

Tuesday’s game was the longest of the season for Myrtle Beach as the Pelicans battled Carolina for four hours and 14 minutes.

He said it

That was one of the longest games I felt like I’ve ever played. I think there were some positives and some negatives, and [Dewees and Flete] really helped us out. We had a chance at the end, but we’ll get back after it [Wednesday].Its definitely a shake-up, but you just have to keep moving on and that’s what we’ve done. We’ll have guys step up [in their place], and I thought we did decent today. The bullpen was a little shaky, but I have confidence we’ll get back after it.
