Final score

Potomac Nationals 3, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2 (10 innings)

Turning point

Potomac second baseman Max Schrock hit an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, and the Nationals held of the Pelicans in the bottom half for the victory.

The man

Schrock, who was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Swinging for the fences

Pelicans catcher Ian Rice hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to tie the game at 2 and keep Myrtle Beach in the game. Rice is batting .375(9-for-24) with two home runs, three RBIs and four runs scored in seven games.

He said it

Null had the one tough inning, but found a way to get through it. But our defense was phenomenal tonight. [Jeffrey] Baez caught a ball that might have been a home run, we turned some double plays, [Daniel] Spingola threw a guy out at the plate, [David] Bote made a great, jumping backhand play. So we got six outs and saved some extra runs with that defense. After Rice hit the home run to tie the game, we got bases loaded with nobody out and couldn’t score another run. That’s the tale of the tape, and unfortunately if you walk people in tie games, they’re going to end up scoring. That’s what bit us in the butt was the one out walk and [reliever James Pugliese] walked the next guy in the 10th to set them up and they took advantage and scored. Our defense kept us in the game; we just need to score more runs. It’s one of those things where a couple of guys will get hot, but the others are falling asleep. We need to get two or three guys going and see if some of the other guys can fill in around the edges. We’re pitching good, playing good defense – we just need to find a way to score runs.
