Final score

Myrtle Beach Pelicans 4, Carolina Mudcats 3

Turning point

After David Bote delivered a pinch-hit single in the eighth inning, outfielder Charcer Burks came through to drive in Bote on an RBI double, which proved to be the game-winner.

The man

Burks, who was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, one run and drew a walk.

New kid on the block

Catcher Ian Rice – a 29th round pick (2015) – went 0-for-3 but drew a walk in his debut with the Pelicans.

He said it

[Starter] Erick Leal, he’s up at the top in the league as far as win total, and he also could’ve been an all-star right there with [Trevor] Clifton, [Jake] Stinnett and [Zach] Hedges. [Starter Jeremy] Null has pitched just as well, too, but he started late and didn’t have enough innings to get enough votes [to be an all-star]. But, the pitching has been giving us a chance, like tonight. The reason we’re able to have a record over .500 is basically because of our pitching in the first half. We had three all-stars, and [James] Farris, [Jose] Rosario and [David] Berg did extremely well before they left. So we’ve got quite a few pitchers that have been pretty consistent and solid, and we need to find some hitters to be consistently good. We’ve been in some good situations to help these hitters, and that’s why you’re in A-Ball is to be in those situations. If you can handle it and get good results, it moves you up the ladder. And we’ve had about 25 percent of our opening roster that’s been called up now.
