Myrtle Beach Pelicans edge Frederick Keys, avoid sweep
Final score
Myrtle Beach Pelicans 1, Frederick Keys 0
Turning point
With Myrtle Beach’s Daniel Spingola batting in the fourth inning, a wild pitch by Frederick starter Matthew Grimes allowed Yasiel Balaguert to score, which proved to be the game’s only run as the Pelicans held on to win.
The man
Pelicans starter Jake Stinnett, who scattered eight hits and two walks across seven scoreless innings.
He said it
Obviously, the story of the game is Stinnett. When you’re in a 1-0 game, you have to put it all back on the pitcher. Then again, we had a couple of great defensive plays. [Third baseman Jason] Vosler made the diving play behind third [base] that would’ve been a leadoff double, [outfielder Jeffrey] Baez had a great play as well and [first baseman Yasiel] Balaguert with the chopper over the bag that could’ve been a run. So, the defense really picked it up to help him out in the ballgame, but he had his best breaking ball of the year for me and located his fastball really well, particularly down and away. Overall, his efficiency, and location and quality of his breaking ball was the best I’ve seen all year. When you do that, you’re going to put up zeros. It shows that we have fight in us, which is big because we took two losses in this series. So, coming out tonight – everyone played great and showed what we can do.
