Myrtle Beach Pelicans come up short against Winston-Salem Dash
Final score
Winston-Salem Dash 4, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 3
Turning point
The Dash put up four runs on Myrtle Beach in the third inning, but Pelicans second baseman Ian Happ – who had a walkoff hit the night before – kept the team very much in the game with an RBI double in the seventh to cut the deficit to 2. Myrtle Beach added a run in the ninth on an inside-the-park leadoff home run by outfielder Rashad Crawford, but the Pelicans failed to push the tying run across.
The man
Crawford, who was a triple shy of the cycle.
He said it
In the third inning, [Winston Salem’s Toby Thomas] hit a home run and we couldn’t keep the damage down. We had a chance with two outs and two strikes and we didn’t execute pitches and made [the deficit] four. The guys clawed back and we had opportunities, but we left too many guys on base. We had some opportunities, especially later in the game; multi-runner situations and a couple of them with nobody out and we couldn’t score. Then, Happy got us off of that with his hit, and Crawford’s home run in the ninth put us down 1 with three outs to go. We had a chance to tie or win the game, but we just couldn’t get it done.Defensively, we made all the plays. [Outfielder Charcer] Burks made a great play; probably the play of the game catching the ball on the line to end the first [inning]. We played steady the rest of the way and, other than the one inning that got away from us, the rest of the game was really good. We hit a lot of balls good, we had a lot of baserunners – we just couldn’t get the hit when we needed to and that’s how you lose a game.I thought Farris was outstanding. You don’t see many guys go out and dominate three innings like he did tonight.
