Lockhart, Myrtle Beach Pelicans rout Frederick Keys
Final score
Myrtle Beach Pelicans 10, Frederick Keys 2 (box score)
Lockhart’s night
Pelicans infielder Daniel Lockhart had a career night Sunday.
Lockhart had four hits and drove in four runs to pace Myrtle Beach’s offense, which had a big night, as the Pelicans took down Frederick.
“Really, I felt like I was just put in good hitting positions with a lot of guys getting on base before me,” Lockhart said of what led to the performance. “It makes my job easier because the pressure is on [the pitcher]. So with them being on base all night, it just put me in a good position.”
Myrtle Beach’s offense pounded out 15 hits and scored three or more runs in three separate innings and five different Pelicans batters had multiple hits.
Pelicans starter Brad Markey (4-0) picked up the victory as he allowed just one run in six innings. Reliever Michael Heesch allowed one run in two innings of work and struck out two, and Josh Conway tossed a shutout frame.
“It’s awesome. The pitching did a great job tonight,” Lockhart said. “[Markey] struggled a little bit with his location in the first but he was able to pick it back up and finish strong. Then Heesch came in and did a good job and Conway closed it out. So, yeah, those guys did a good job.”
Myrtle Beach wrapped up the homestand going 5-1 and won both of its series.
“It’s been great, I feel like we’ve been starting to click on all cylinders,” Lockhart said. “Our pitching has been really good and our [offense] has been picking it up. We’re both picking each other up if either of us has an off-game.”
Turning point
After scoring three runs in the second inning, the Pelicans tacked on three more in the sixth as Lockhart delivered a two-RBI single and Jason Vosler had an RBI base hit to give Myrtle Beach a five-run lead.
