Sunday’s area sports briefs
Tyler Skulina struck out a career-high eight batters in six shutout innings and Billy McKinney provided all of the offense via a pair of solo home runs to lead the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 2-1 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Sunday.
Skulina allowed just one hit and walked one batter, while McKinney went deep in fourth and seventh innings.
The Hillcats got their lone run when Eric Haase was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth inning. However, James Pugliese got Paul Hendrix to ground out to strand the bases loaded and end the game in the next at-bat.
Sunday’s win was the Pelicans’ third straight and they will try to complete a four-game sweep in the series finale at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
