No-hit bid helps Rucker snatch Carolina League weekly honor
Mike Rucker’s near miss apparently proved to be a no-brainer for those in charge of handing out the Carolina League’s weekly awards.
After pitching seven innings of one-hit ball last week against Winston-Salem, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitcher was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week.
He is the first Pelicans player to earn one of the league’s weekly awards this season.
An 11th-round selection in 2016 by the Chicago Cubs, Rucker is 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 12 games this season. The right-hander has struck out 48 batters, while offering 13 walks in 47 innings of work.
Before coming to the Cubs’ Class A-Advanced affiliate in Myrtle Beach, Rucker spent time at Low-A South Bend. In 12 2/3 innings, he had a 1.42 ERA, striking out 22 batters without issuing a walk.
