Myrtle Beach quarterback Doty earns offer from Coastal Carolina

Luke Doty has yet to play a down for the Myrtle Beach varsity football team. In fact, the Seahawk rising freshman hasn’t even played for the junior varsity.

But he’ll enter high school next month with something else in his back pocket.

A college scholarship offer.

Doty, a 6-foot-1 quarterback, received an offer from Coastal Carolina last week, a product of a successful camp season this summer. During those, he’s shown off his strong arm and quick decision making.

Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson said that while he’s happy for Doty, and believes he is a special talent, that he also isn’t guaranteed any varsity playing time this year. Senior Austin Riggs and junior Lawson Cribb have varsity experience, and both have also played well in spring ball and summer 7-on-7s.

“With recruiting, especially the quarterback position, he’s got a lot of tangibles those guys like,” Wilson said of Doty. “He’s a tall kid; he’s a fast kid; he throws the ball extremely well. When you go to a camp and do those those things, you’re going to get a college recruiter’s attention.

“At the same time, we’re not going to put anybody on the field based on potential. All of our positions are earned. … We’re not going to, at any time, no matter who it is, we’re not going to go on what a college coach thinks could happen down the road.”

Wilson’s quarterback situation will be determined in August after all three players have had full-pad reps. Although he has rotated two quarterbacks in the past, Wilson said it is unlikely he would rotate three.
