Much more than football lies ahead for Nation Ford’s Tuipulotu
Some things just seem to come naturally.
As a tight end at Nation Ford, Hank Tuipulotu’s ability to catch the football allowed him to become one of South Carolina’s top receiving threats, allowing the Falcons to soar to new heights this past season.
His senior campaign may have proven to be his best, catching 125 passes for 1,711 yards and 11 touchdowns. In fact, it ranks as one of the most productive in state history, ranking second all-time in terms of receptions over the course of a season.
“It was a ton of fun,” he said. “Me and my teammates spent four years in that offense. Seeing it come to fruition and be super productive was fun.”
However, the casual college football enthusiast will not find Tuipolotu’s name on a college roster next season, or hear of his many accomplishments courtesy of broadcasters on a random Saturday afternoon. Instead, his accolades will be earned off the field, sticking with something that has been on his heart for years now.
A BYU commit, Tuipulotu has ground his football career to a halt, making his faith a top priority. A devout follower of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Nation Ford standout plans to take his two year-mission when he turns 18-years-old.
Saturday’s Touchstone Energy Bowl – North vs South Game will be his final game before heading off to do missionary work.
“I was taught early on that going on a mission is a big part of your life, and a big learning experience,” Tuipulotu said. “It is important to give up a little time to serve others. That’s a big part of why I want to go.”
To some, such a choice may have proven difficult, particularly following such a successful year. According to Tuipulotu, the decision actually was relatively painless.
Really it was an easy choice, and the chance to go on a mission is part of why I chose BYU,” he said.
A strong family tradition at the school also helps.
Tuipolotu’s father, Peter, and uncle, Tom, played at BYU in the 1980s. His mother also played basketball at the school.
Though excited about what his future holds, Tuipulotu understands there is significant work to be done Saturday afternoon.
“I’m trying to have fun,” Tuipulotu said. “I have great coaches and cool teammates, both of whom know what they’re doing and how to play this game. I’m eager to show what we can do.”
