Clemson commit Tavien Feaster named South Carolina’s top high school football player
Tavien Feaster capped off an award-winning day for the Spartanburg football team.
Feaster was named South Carolina’s Mr. Football Thursday at the Palmetto Champions Award dinner at Seawell’s. The senior running back is the first Spartanburg player to win the award since Stephen Davis in 1992.
Feaster’s the first Clemson commitment to win the award since Roscoe Crosby in 2000.
“Legends have held this award right here, so it is an honor and blessing to be a part of it,” said Feaster, who’s only taking an official visits to Clemson. “All five guys up there were phenomenal. They had phenomenal careers and seasons. Every guy up there could have grabbed that award, so I’m truly blessed it was me.”
Feaster’s win was one of four awards won by Spartanburg players and coaches. Vikings quarterback Austin Scott won the Palmetto Champions Back of the Year during the ceremony and was named South Carolina’s Gatorade Player of the Year earlier in the day.
Spartanburg coach Chris Miller was named the Palmetto Champions Coach of the Year.
“We are behind the scenes and we see it all as coaches. We know what they represent and what they do every day at school and how they treat their teammates. They are two great kids,” Miller said of Scott and Feaster.
Feaster’s the top-ranked prospect in the state by every recruiting service, and 34th in ESPN’s Top 300 for the Class of 2016. He has been the workhorse in the Vikings offense the past three seasons and racked up 1,971 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns this year – despite missing some time with injuries.
The Vikings are the defending Class 4A, Division II champions and will host Lexington on Friday in the semifinals.
Feaster was one of five finalists for Mr. Football. The others were Chapin quarterback Logan Bailey, Conway receiver Bryan Edwards, Dorman quarterback Collin Hill and Fort Dorchester lineman John Simpson.
Simpson was named the Palmetto Champions Lineman of the Year.
Pickens kicker Matthew Gravely was named Palmetto Champions Specialist of the Year.
In addition to the players awards, two Palmetto Champions Service awards were handed out to former South Carolina State football coach Willie Jeffries and South Carolina recruiting services coordinator Robbie Lies.
