South Carolina coaches hit the road Monday to see as many recruits as possible while the head coaching search continues. One of their first stops was in Conway to see former commitment wide receiver Bryan Edwards.

“Coach Spurrier Jr. and Coach Elliott were here on Monday,” said Conway coach Chuck Jordan. “I think he will take an official visit to USC before Christmas. But he could make a decision before that and won’t take a visit.”

Edwards has taken an official visit to Clemson and Jordan said his decision is between the Tigers and Gamecocks. He doesn’t believe Georgia is a factor at this point.

“He’s trying to be real deliberate especially having decommitted,” Jordan said. “He understands he needs to be absolutely for sure. He’ll tell me when he feels good about it. Clemson wants him to make a decision soon and Carolina wants him to wait. They are just in different places.”

USC continues to recruit Edwards as a receiver. Clemson reportedly sees him as a safety in their program.

State’s Mr. Football award to be decided Thursday

Edwards will learn Thursday evening whether he has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the S.C. Mr. Football award.

The Conway receiver is among five finalists for the prestigious honor, joining Chapin quarterback Logan Bailey, Spartanburg running back Tavien Feaster, Dorman quarterback Collin Hill and Fort Dorchester offensive lineman John Simpson.

A ceremony presenting the award will take place during the Palmetto Champions banquet at Seawell’s in Columbia. Festivities begin at 7 p.m.

The ceremony was moved from halftime of the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl North Vs. South in lieu of playoff delays. That day, Dec. 12, will also serve as the state championships for Class AAAA and Class AAA.

In addition, to the Mr. Football award, the state’s top back, lineman, specialist and coach of the year for each classification will be recognized.

Edwards is the No. 3 prospect in the state. Prior to a knee injury which ended his prep career, he had 53 catches for 969 yards and nine touchdowns. In addition to being a finalist for S.C. Mr. Football, he also was named to the Sandlappers’ roster for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, in addition to an invite from the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Conway’s Mykal Moody (2012) and Myrtle Beach’s Everett Golson (2010) were the last two local players named as finalists for the award. Myrtle Beach quarterback J.D. Melton (2004) is the only Grand Strand football player to have ever won it.

Like Edwards, Feaster and Simpson were also invited to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. All five finalists are Shrine Bowl selections, with that game taking place Dec. 19 at Wofford’s Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg.
