Friday’s Games

Darlington (6-4) at Georgetown (7-3)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | By Sunday of this week, Georgetown coach Bradley Adams admitted even he was burnt on out the study sessions. “We’ve watched so much film we’re tired of it,” he said of Darlington game tape. The extra time watching film was a byproduct of two things. First, the Bulldogs learned the Falcons would be their first-round opponent nearly two full weeks ago. Secondly, and maybe more important, was that the Bulldogs were doing limited implementation of some of the scheme in order to allow quarterback Jarvis Brown additional time to recuperate from a minor ankle injury suffered Oct. 23 at Myrtle Beach. The senior, Adams said, will be 100 percent healthy to play Friday, and that’s exactly what makes Georgetown so dangerous. The touchdown machine has already accounted for 31 scores and more than 2,500 total yards so far this year.

St. James (6-4) at Marlboro County (6-4)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | St. James has the historical goals it set for itself - its first guaranteed winning record and only its third trip to the postseason - already in hand. But in order to win that first ever playoff game, the Sharks are going to have to be ready to play maybe one of the more athletic and tested teams on this side of the state. By now, we know not to read too much into Marlboro County’s record. It was just one year ago this time that the Bulldogs entered the playoffs at 5-5, only to make a run to the Lower State finals. The reason why is in the numbers: Dean Boyd’s team is very good at sizing up opponents early and then causing damage. Marlboro County scored 107 second-quarter points, another 96 in third quarters and then another 82 in the fourth quarter of games this season. So for St. James to add another milestone to its 2015 season, the Sharks will have to play a true four-quarter game.

North Myrtle Beach (5-5) at Hartsville (10-0)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | There really wasn’t any doubt that North Myrtle Beach would be named one of the Lower State at-large teams for the playoffs when the region coordinators met last week. The Chiefs’ strength of schedule led them to a points-system total that rivaled even a few region champions across the state, let alone the fourth-place teams they were competing with for a postseason berth. The reward was a trip to Hartsville, the undisputed No. 1 ranked team in Class AAA and one that has basically blown the doors off every opponent it has faced so far this year. However, if there is a bit of hope for North Myrtle Beach fans, it is that the Chiefs have played that top-notch schedule. Seven of the Chiefs’ opponents are playoff-bound, and if North Myrtle Beach’s defense is able to get a couple stops - something that hasn’t come easily for opponents of the Red Foxes this year - Blair Hardin’s team could put a scare into Hartsville.

Wade Hampton (6-4) at Loris (4-6)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | Loris coach Jamie Snider tinkered some with his offense in the last few weeks, giving back-up quarterback Clay Faircloth more snaps while moving senior Ta’Jay Williams to wide receiver. The move added another wrinkle to the Lions’ offense, as Williams’ dynamic play-making ability put him in open space. It also helped keep opponents from simply trying to lock down top receiver Desmond Dozier. However, if the move was anything, it was rushed because of the tightly clustered regular season that included five games in four weeks. Even coming off a loss, Loris has had another week to improve the scheme. Williams, a true triple threat in the offense now, has way to impact a game and give the Lions a legitimate shot at another playoff victory under Snider.

Waccamaw (4-6) at Dillon (10-0)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | Like many teams around the state, Waccamaw’s chances of an improved playoff seeding took a hit during the October storms that caused school closings and delayed football games. The Warriors lost two winnable games in the span of four days. “Before the flooding, we were really peaking coming off a bye week,” coach Tyronne Davis said. “However, playing two games (Loris and Aynor) on a short week, did not work in our favor.” The end result was Waccamaw requiring a pair of tie-breakers to get into the postseason and the unenviable task of playing powerhouse Dillon in the first round. The Warriors have yet to keep any of their nine games against the Wildcats within 35 points, but that’s not a shock considering only one opponent all year has been able to do that against Jackie Hayes’ team.

Carvers Bay (4-6) at Allendale-Fairfax (9-1)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | Carvers Bay’s defense started to really show up at just the right time. The Bears, after some less-than-stellar efforts against teams from bigger classes (Andrews and Georgetown, specifically) in the early part of the year, displayed some grit against their region opponents. Creek Bridge, Green Sea-Floyds and Hemingway totaled just eight points combined against Nate Thompson’s team, and Carvers Bay even had respectable showings against Latta and Lake View, two of the better teams in Class A. However, if the Bears are going to pull the upset this week, the other side of the ball is going to need to be on point, as well. Allendale-Fairfax has given up just 90 points all season, a figure that stands second only to Bamberg-Ehrhardt in the classification. The Tigers shut out three opponents this year and held two others to single digits.

Game of the Week

Dreher (5-5) at Myrtle Beach (7-3)

When | 7:30 p.m.

The game | Dreher lost each of its last three games - against fellow playoff teams Chapin, A.C. Flora and Richland Northeast - after allowing an average of 40 points per game in those three contests. If the Blue Devils don’t reverse course in a hurry, that’s something that could play directly into Myrtle Beach’s hands. The Seahawks’ offense has scored at least five touchdowns in each of its last five games. Quarterback Drayton Arnold and top receivers Elijah Rice and Cortez Brown are in sync and tailback Brandon Sinclair has rushed for at least 100 yards in three straight games since returning from a concussion that forced him to miss the game against Lake City on Oct. 9. All that production against the Region VII-AAA slate allowed Myrtle Beach to earn a No. 1 seed and the rights to at least three home games, given the Seahawks continue to win. That’s something Myrtle Beach has had little trouble with. Since 2004, they’ve won at least one playoff game each year.

Position | Quarterback

The scoop | If anyone was waiting for Arnold to get hot during the Seahawks’ 2-3 start, they aren’t waiting anymore. The senior quarterback has been on a tear during the team’s last five games, the only ones played against Class AAA competition this season. During region play, Arnold threw for 1,337 yards (an average of 267 per game) and 17 touchdowns (against only two interceptions) while completing 70 percent of his passes. Those are numbers that the rest of the Seahawks know could help them advance not only past the first round, but deep into the playoffs.
