Carvers Bay shuts out Green Sea Floyds to improve to 2-0 in region

To simply play a football game was big for the Carvers Bay players.

Winning 28-0 over Green Sea Floyds on Tuesday night made it that much sweeter.

With several players displaced because of the recent rains and flooding, the Bears had nearly their whole team together as they got back on the field and felt some sort of normalcy again.

“Those kids are very resilient. That was a big plus,” Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson said of his kids getting to play Tuesday’s game, originally scheduled for last Friday. “It was a good distraction for them. Not that it’s over; we’re still going through it. But (playing) was one of the major things they wanted to do. I think that made a difference in the ballgame. They really wanted to play.”

The Bears had a lone practice Monday before playing Tuesday. A South Carolina High School League ruling earlier in the day gave Carvers Bay – and the state’s other schools – a chance to reschedule as the state playoffs were pushed back a week.

However, with short notice, the Bears went on with the initial plan to play.

“It was a last-minute thing,” Thompson said. “We had already planned to play on Tuesday. We already told our kids that this is what we had to do. The kids wanted it and the community kind of wanted it, too. With the help of the administration and the school, everything worked out on its own.”

In typical Carvers Bay fashion, the Bears looked to their defense and ground game to beat the Trojans. They piled up 197 yards rushing and the defense pitched a shutout.

“We ran the ball most of the night,” Thompson said. “We knew that with the kids coming in with just one day of practice that we couldn’t put in a whole lot of stuff and we couldn’t try to do a lot. We decided to just keep it simple and do the things we do best.”

The defense was able to limit Green Sea Floyds, which likes to control the clock with its ground game.

“We played better defense tonight,” Thompson said. “Offensively, we moved the ball. We controlled the ball most of the night. That was kind of the difference in the ballgame.”

Carvers Bay improved to 2-0 in Region VIII-A play to sit atop the league with Lake View, the Bears’ opponent with a quick turnaround Friday.

“This is new for us and new for the kids as well,” Thompson said. “We’ve worked on film already on them. We had to prepare for two teams instead of one. We’ll start working with our kids on how Lake View runs the ball and how their offense and defense is.

“… We take it one game at a time. We got to play tonight. Now, we’ve got to play Lake View on Friday. They’re one of the best teams out there.”
