The Seahawks woke up just in time.

Myrtle Beach trailed by as many as 20 points before rallying to beat Lake City 38-32 when Cortez Brown took a run in from seven yards out in double overtime.

“It was a noon game Saturday,” Seahawks coach Mickey Wilson said. “It’s kind of like we were asleep.”

Down 20-7 at the half, Myrtle Beach outscored the Panthers 26-12 in the second half to force overtime. Both teams failed to score in the first overtime and, after stopping Lake City to start the second OT period, the Seahawks put the game away on Brown’s run.

“You don’t want to find yourself down by 20,” Wilson said. “But in saying that, I’m real proud of our kids because they battled back. They went through all kinds of adversity. They showed a lot of heart and guts in the second half and were able to get a win.”

Brown had another touchdown run in regulation, Keyonte Sessions scored on a run and Elijah Rice scored three times, one coming on a punt return and the others coming on passes from quarterback Drayton Arnold.

The Seahawks were without Brandon Sinclair, who entered the week as the area’s second-leading rusher but sat out after suffering a concussion in last week’s game.

“I’m proud of them for battling and getting the win,” Wilson said.

The Seahawks missed three extra points and two field goals, including a long attempt near the end of regulation that could have won the game.

That was just one area in which Wilson wants to see his team improve as it prepares to take on St. James (4-3, 1-1 Region VII-AAA) next week.

“We need to get better. We’ll try to start doing that on Monday,” Wilson said. “We’ll be facing a tough (test with St. James). It’s a huge game. St. James is a very good football team. Coach (Robby) Brown does a really good job over there.”

Despite Saturday’s close call, Myrtle Beach (4-3, 2-0) enters next week sitting alone atop the region. Georgetown is 1-0 but has yet to play its scheduled game against North Myrtle Beach because of weather and being out of school all of last week.

“Our region is tough this year,” Wilson said. “To come on the road like this during a crazy week – it’s been like this for everybody – on the road in a tough environment and be down 20 and come back and win (is great). I’m proud of our guys and our coaches. It was phenomenal considering the circumstances.”
