Green Sea Floyds battles early but Lake View proves too much

Green Sea Floyds coach Tony Sullivan knows his team has shown improvement this season.

The win-loss column proves that.

However, he also knows his team has a ways to go before it can beat teams like Lake View, a 34-8 winner over the Trojans on Friday night.

“We played hard. Barring the Waccamaw game, we’ve played good week in and week out,” said Sullivan, whose team is 2-4 after going winless a year ago. “We’re just not good enough right now to make mistakes and overcome them.”

That again proved the case Friday as the Wild Gators capitalized on Green Sea Floyds’ turnovers to turn a game that was 14-8 at halftime into a rout in both teams’ Region VIII-A opener.

“We played OK in the first half. We got ourselves in pretty good position in the first half and just played well,” Sullivan said. “In the second half, I dunno, we just couldn’t sustain blocks and get drives going. They stifled us on offense. We couldn’t get no breaks in the second half.”

Trailing 14-0 near the end of the first half, Wyatt Upchurch got the Trojans on the board on an en-around reverse he took 60 yards into the end zone.

“He broke a couple tackles and made a great run,” Sullivan said.

But in the second half fumbles and penalties plagued Green Sea Floyds as it was unable to get its time-consuming running game going again.

“We didn’t help ourselves out a lot on some opportunities,” Sullivan said.

However, a big part of that was the opponent. Lake View flexed its muscle against a Grand Strand opponent for the second straight week. The Wild Gators cruised past Aynor 44-8 a week ago.

“Lake View is such a small school, but a small school with so many athletes,” Sullivan said. “They’re hard to match up with one-on-one. They’ve got half the kids we’ve got but double the football players. They could probably play for a state championship this year. And most of their players are juniors and sophomores; there’s not a lot of seniors playing. That’s going to be tough to handle over the next few years.”

Next up for Green Sea Floyds is a road game against Carvers Bay, a team Sullivan and the Trojans are plenty familiar with.

“Whenever you’ve got to go to Carvers Bay it’s always different. They’re pretty good at their own place. They’ve got a lot of good athletes year in and year out,” Sullivan said. “We’ve just got to sustain drives and that’s what we haven’t been able to do the last couple weeks.

“I think our defense is playing well at times. We’ve just got to do a better job on offense and keep the clock on our side.”
