Brown leads way as Georgetown holds on to beat Loris

Georgetown quarterback Jarvis Brown passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Bulldogs held on for a 21-19 win over Loris on Friday night at Heniford Field.

Brown, a senior, was 11-for-15 passing for 195 yards and rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries for the Bulldogs, who improved to 4-1 with the victory in the final non-conference game of the regular season for both teams.

“Jarvis is obviously our leader and he does a tremendous job,” Georgetown coach Bradley Adams said. “We’re just trying to keep him healthy as much as possible. We could probably do a lot more with him, but we want to have him ready to go next week going into region opponents.”

The Lions (2-3) found fortune early when linebacker Aaron Sarvis recovered a Brown fumble and returned it 90 yards to give Loris an early 6-0 lead. The Lions had a chance to add to the margin after a high snap on a Georgetown punt, but Loris quarterback Ta’Jay Williams was picked off by Cavonte Gamble at the 2 to end the opportunity.

Georgetown countered when Brown threw a screen pass to Gamble, who went 88 yards for the touchdown with 16 seconds left in the first quarter. Then the Bulldogs stretched the lead when Brown scored on a quarterback keeper from 39 yards out with 9:07 left in the second.

“In the first half we had a little game plan, a few things out of a few formations, and we were able to have some success with that early,” Adams said. “We just stuck with it and eventually we caught a few big breaks on it.”

Loris cut into the margin after a defensive stand that resulted in a Georgetown quick kick that was returned 69 yards by the Lions’ Corey Hemingway to cut the score to 14-12.

Georgetown added another touchdown late in the first half on Brown’s second scoring pass, this time to Deakidd Anderson from 44 yards out.

All of Brown’s passing yardage came in the first half, when he went 10-of-12. He was 2-for-3 in the second half, connecting on a pair of screen passes that gained no ground as Georgetown trusted in its defense to close out the win.

“In the second half, I felt like our defense was playing really, really well and we didn’t want to take any chances with another turnover,’’ Adams said. “We just wanted to be very cautious in the second half because our defense was playing so well.”

The Bulldog defense held the Lions to less than 100 yards rushing in the game, and didn’t allow an offensive score until late in the fourth quarter when Williams connected with Desmond Dozier on a 44-yard scoring play for the game’s final points.

Loris coach Jamie Snider said the game came down to three or four things that went wrong, and the has been the hallmark of his team’s season so far.

“In the games that we’ve won, we’ve been able to make more plays than they have,’’ Snider said. “The games that we haven’t, they made more plays than we did.”

Snider said he was pleased with his team’s effort in the second half, and that he saw some good things to build on as his team begins region play next Friday.

“They didn’t give up. They kept fighting,” Snider said. “We had some opportunities late, but we just waited a little too late to get started.”
