As area teams have reached or are approaching the midway point of their seasons, it’s starting to become clear who has a legitimate chance of finishing with with top-end individual numbers.

Heading into Week 5 games, four area running backs and one receiver are on pace to reach 1,000 yards for the season, while just one quarterback is on pace for a 2,000-yard passing year. That is based on 11 games, be it the regular season and one playoff game for players in Classes AAA, AA and A or the regular season for Class AAAA. Obviously some players will have the advantage of deeper playoff runs or second-half bursts. There are also several players not currently on pace to reach those milestones who could easily do so based on past production or expected improvement.

But for the time being, it is those six. Running backs Dyverse Simmons of Carolina Forest and Brandon Sinclair of Myrtle Beach are leading the way, with North Myrtle Beach’s Kered Class just behind them in his first season with the varsity program. Conway’s Jah’Maine Martin is also well on his way toward a second consecutive 1,000-yard season.

In the passing game, it’s all Conway. Quarterback Peyton Derrick is not only on pace to break the 2,000-yard mark during the regular season. But at his current pace, he will challenge the program’s top two passing seasons during Chuck Jordan’s tenure, both owned by older brother Dakota Derrick. The elder Derrick had a pair of 2,400-yard seasons in 2007 and 2006 before playing collegiately at Furman.

Peyton Derrick put his name at No. 3 on the list last year when he threw for 1,981 yards.

His favorite target is right there with him. Bryan Edwards is on pace to top 1,000 yards for the season with three games to spare in the regular season.
