Carvers Bay defense holds strong in victory over Waccamaw
Carvers Bay’s offense got off to a slow start Friday night.
But a strong defensive effort helped the Bears rally past Waccamaw for a 20-6 win.
Trailing 6-0 with around 20 seconds left in the second quarter, quarterback John Frasier found the end zone to allow Carvers Bay to go into the break with a tie game.
“It let our kids know they could play,” Bears coach Nate Thompson said. “We got some momentum going into the third quarter.”
After a scoreless third, Carvers Bay recovered a fumble that led to Calvin Miller’s 10-yard scoring run early in the fourth, and the Bears pulled away on Quevon Dickerson’s 35-yard touchdown run late in the frame.
“The key for us was defense,” Thompson said. “We swarmed to the ball and tried to bottle them up.”
After a season-opening loss to Johnsonville a week ago, Carvers Bay is 1-1 heading into another game against a Georgetown county rival in Andrews next week.
“We hope to build off this win,” Thompson said. “We know we’ve got a tough schedule early. We always have a tough schedule at the beginning.”
