North Myrtle Beach overcomes injuries to put hurting on West Brunswick (N.C.)

North Myrtle Beach entered Friday’s game a little beat up. By the end of the contest the Chiefs were ailing even more.

But not before they unleashed a knockout punch on West Brunswick (N.C.).

Quarterback Ronnie Bass threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns while also scoring on a run to lead North Myrtle Beach to a 34-7 win over longtime north-of-the-border rival West Brunswick.

“The biggest thing was we had a lot of guys out tonight and during the game we lost a few more,” Chiefs coach Blair Hardin said. “I’m proud of the way our kids responded. We played as a team. At times we played mistake-free football. I’m proud of our team playing a good, consistent football game.”

Hardin said his squad was without a pair of seniors and a key offensive lineman who were injured. After Friday’s game, a few more players were nicked up.

“We were thin at times tonight. We had guys go down tonight,” he said. “But I’m proud of how our kids responded.”

Despite the injuries, the Chiefs were able to slow what Hardin described as a “power running game team.”

“Our defense had to stop that,” he said. “Our offense was able to put together drives and get in the end zone. We played consistent football on both sides tonight.”

Kered Class ran for 101 yards and a touchdown and Dequan Montgomery added 98 yards and a score in the running game. Reece Finch and Tyler Gore caught touchdown passes from Bass.

Moving forward, Hardin stressed having other players step up as the Chiefs deal with the injury bug.

“That’s the philosophy: next man in, next man ready,” he said.
