Football Friday: Get all you need to know to be ready for Week 2 high school football action
Game of the week
Green Sea Floyds (2-0) at Aynor (1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m.
The game: Fan of the spread offense or the forward pass in general? You probably just want to go ahead and skip this game. Green Sea Floyds and Aynor have combined to throw it just nine times (in three combined games). “It’s probably going to be the quickest game of the year,” Trojans coach Tony Sullivan said. “We start at 7:30. They run the ball. We run the ball. It might be over by 8:30.” And maybe the most intriguing part of the matchup is that each team plans to do just that with so many different players. Green Sea Floyds has three of the area’s top-10 rushers. In total, seven Blue Jackets had at least one carry in a Week 1 win over Creek Bridge. The Trojans will have to find a way around that if they want to end what has been a five-year winning streak in the series.

Favorite: Aynor
Player to watch
Zach Todd
School: Aynor
Class: Senior
Position: Running back
The scoop: Like pretty much anyone not named Kamron Johnson or Daquan Smith at Aynor a year ago, Todd had to bide his time until he’d have an opportunity for more carries. Blue Jackets coach Jody Jenerette said he probably should have given him more chances in 2014, but it stands to reason Todd will be able to make up for it now. With 11 touches last week, the senior rushed for 84 yards – an average of better than 7.6 per carry. And while the Aynor backfield will always be full, he could be the next 1,000-yard guy.
The games
All times 7:30 p.m.
Socastee (0-2) at Conway (2-0)
The game: There’s little doubt that Conway’s offense is looking head and shoulders ahead of last year’s. But arguably the bigger difference for 2015 could be how well the defense can adjust to different schemes. So far, the Tigers have done well against Georgetown and South Brunswick (N.C.). And against Socastee, coordinator Kelly Andreucci’s defense should have another crack at some fine-tuning prior to a string of games against higher-caliber offenses. The Braves are still working into a spread offense and have yet to put up more than 230 yards in either of their first two games.

St. James (1-1) at Carolina Forest (1-1)
The game: When these teams met a year ago, it could be considered the true revelation of Marc Morris’ run-first offense at Carolina Forest. The Panthers racked up 532 yards on the ground and cruised to a six-touchdown victory. Obviously they’d love to put up that type of production again. However, we’re about to see if Morris’ team is ready for the next step of development – rebounding from a tough loss against one of the state’s best. The Panthers need to make sure their one-touchdown loss to Fort Dorchester a week ago doesn’t linger. Because regardless of what happened a year or a week ago, St. James is also an improved team that has already shown a flair for the upset this season.

West Florence (1-0) at Myrtle Beach (0-1)
The game: Myrtle Beach’s high-octane offense never found the gas pedal in a loss to Charlotte Christian(N.C.) last week. As concerning as that was, however, it may be a wake-up call for the now-former No. 1 team in Class AAA. Quarterback Drayton Arnold’s three interceptions in that game were troubling. But it’s also clear that the Seahawks’ receiver corps is a work in progress. So while Myrtle Beach is 23-2 all time against teams from Florence and Arnold threw five touchdowns against the Knights last year, the guys who caught most of his touchdown passes last year – mainly Kyle Belack and Malik Waring – are gone. Until the quarterback-receiver relationship strengthens, there could be more bumps in the road.

Favorite: Myrtle Beach
North Myrtle Beach (1-1) at West Brunswick, N.C. (2-0)
The game: North Myrtle Beach’s case of the fumbles struck again last week against Loris. And while the Chiefs were eventually able to overcome two being returned for touchdowns, second-year coach Blair Hardin has already stated multiple times that is his team’s biggest concern. Considering his team ran for more than 225 yards against a normally stout Lions defense, and he could be otherwise happy with what his team was able to do with its triple-option offense.

Last year: North Myrtle Beach 26, West Brunswick 13
Favorite: North Myrtle Beach
Georgetown (0-1) at Andrews (2-0)
The game: Georgetown has had a week off to rebound mentally from a season-opening loss to Conway. And with three straight games against in-county programs, the Bulldogs are raring to get into the win column. Despite losing some significant talent, Bradley Adams’ squad would likely be considered the consensus favorite to win the round robin between the four Georgetown County programs. That includes Friday against a Yellow Jacket team still climbing up the Class AA ranks.

South Columbus, N.C. (0-2) at Loris (0-2)
The game: Lions coach Jamie Snider can finally add one of those less-than-desired factoids to his head-coaching resume. With losses to St. James and North Myrtle Beach so far this year, Loris has dropped back-to-back games for the first time since he took over the program prior to the 2011 season. The chances of a third consecutive loss, though, appear slim. For starters, Loris has played extremely well against the Stallions of late. And more importantly, Loris quarterback Ta’Jay Williams (200 passing yards, 100 rushing yards) is expected to be fine after getting banged up some last week.
On the air: WLSC-AM, 1240
Last year: Loris 50, South Columbus 0
Favorite: Loris
Waccamaw (1-1) at Carvers Bay (0-1)
The game: Tyronne Davis’ squad used a win over Carvers Bay a year ago – the first over the Bears in the history of the two schools – to propel itself the rest of the way. In that game, Waccamaw’s defense created turnovers, none bigger than a fourth-quarter fumble recovery. While the Warriors take a patient approach with star running back Kevin Gasque (ankle), the team is finding others, such as R.J. Knowlin, making the most of their playing time.

Area rankings
Here are the top teams in the Grand Strand area as ranked by The Sun News’ Ian Guerin:
BIG CLASS
1. Myrtle Beach: Loss to Charlotte Christian will be forgotten if Seahawks right their ship.
2. Conway: The Tigers’ offense showed it has serious quick-strike potential.
3. Carolina Forest: Panthers shouldn’t hang their heads after close loss to Fort Dorchester.
SMALL CLASS
1. Loris: Jamie Snider’s team has struggled out of the gate, but against solid competition.
2. Aynor: Blue Jackets’ biggest test may not come for weeks.
3. Waccamaw: Benefit of best players missing time is seeing previous unknowns step up.
