Mistakes prove costly as Carvers Bay drops opener against Johnsonville
Sometimes it’s the little things that matter most.
On Friday night, such was the case for the Carvers Bay football team.
The Bears were plagued by penalties, missed tackles and other minor but crucial details in a 28-12 season-opening loss to Johnsonville.
“It was the first game and we’ve got to work on some fundamental things,” Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson said. “We just need to come back to fundamentals and try to eliminate some of the mistakes that we made. That’s one of the things we’ve got to do.
“We’ve got to be able to come back [to practice] and go through the things they had problems with and work with them this week.”
He was quick to credit the Flashes as well.
“In the first game you find a lot of things that you do wrong and against a team like them you find out in a hurry,” Thompson said. “Hats off to them. They’re a good team and they’re going to go far.”
The Bears trailed 12-6 at the half, and Johnsonville ballooned that lead to 28-6 in the second half. Carvers Bay didn’t give up, but in the end the Flashes proved to be too much.
“We got behind and made a comeback. Our kids worked their way back,” Thompson said. “Those are some positive things. Other positive things is I think they want to get better. They’ve got some fight in them, so that’s a good thing.”
Calvin Miller ran for 36 yards and a touchdown on nine carries and Dijon Goss provided the other score on a 10-yard reception from John Frasier. Levi White ran for 37 yards and completed four passes for 42 yards and Darry Goss Jr. had 85 yards receiving.
Defensively, Janav Sumpter had a fumble recovery and Darius Franklin (seven), Marquiese Goss (six), Quevon Dickerson (six) and Daquan Carr (five) did the bulk of the tackling for Carvers Bay.
“You’ve got to be able to eliminate mistakes,” Thompson said. “They have to learn to believe they can win and I think that can happen.”
