Carolina Forest, St. James, Green Sea Floyds complete rare triple
Carolina Forest, St. James and Green Sea Floyds haven’t enjoyed an abundance of wins on the football field.
All three have all-time losing records; and St. James has yet to finish a single season with a winning record in 11 years of varsity ball. But last Friday, the three schools all won on the same night for just the second time ever.
Carolina Forest ran through Darlington 31-6, St. James pulled one of the bigger upsets in the area by defeating Loris 23-20, and Green Sea Floyds, which hadn’t won since beating Hannah-Pamplico on Oct. 11, 2013, defeated the Raiders 26-13 to end a 13-game losing streak.
The only other time all three teams won on the same night was in 2007, also on opening night.
“It doesn’t seem impossible. It doesn’t seem like an odd stat,” St. James coach Robby Brown, who previously served as the Carolina Forest offensive coordinator and interim head coach. “Carolina Forest has had some good teams. They’ve had some winning seasons.”
Lining up wins between all three throughout the years hasn’t been easy. Although, they have shared several near misses for all three winning on the same night since St. James started playing varsity football in 2004.
During that year, on the night of St. James’ lone victory of the season, Carolina Forest defeated Green Sea Floyds. The following season, St. James went winless, something Carolina Forest did in 2008 and Green Sea Floyds did last fall. (That 2008 season equated to the fewest wins among the three with only six.)
In 2011, St. James and Carolina Forest each won on Sept. 23. The Trojans’ game, however, was delayed due to weather. Green Sea Floyds ultimately lost to Latta in a rare Monday contest.
