Myrtle Beach takes out a year of frustration on Marlboro County

Myrtle Beach wouldn’t admit that it had revenge on its mind coming into Friday’s matchup with Marlboro County, but the scoreboard would leave no doubt after a 62-14 thrashing of the region foe.

Last season, Marlboro County ended the Seahawks’ (5-4, 2-1 Region 7-4A) undefeated season, which eventually led to Myrtle Beach being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs (3-5, 0-2 Region) would never have a chance to upset Myrtle Beach on Friday, as the Seahawks jumped out to 21-0 in the opening six minutes of the game. Marlboro County would answer with a score, but Myrtle Beach’s offensive attack would completely bury the competition, going up 55-7 at the halftime break.

“We’ve gotten into a little bit of a rhythm, offensively,” said Myrtle Beach head coach Mickey Wilson. “Anytime we can come out early in the game and put points on the board, it kind of puts us in a really good situation, defensively and offensively. It’s important to get on the board early and set the tone.”

Helping set the tone was Jermani Green, who scored all four of his touchdowns in the first half, three rushing and an interception return, to help his team build a quick lead.

“I just want to thank my coaches and teammates for putting me in the position to make plays,” he said of his performance. “It feels great. We have been working hard in practice and we can see it paying off during the games. We’ve done better in turnovers and our focus during the games.”

The Myrtle Beach defense came away with two touchdowns on the day, both in the first half, to aid the powerful Seahawk offense.

“We’re doing a really good job defensively now,” Wilson said. “Early on in the season we had a lot of juniors and sophomores that were playing on that side of the ball and they weren’t really comfortable because of inexperience. I think they’ve gotten that experience now and it has made them really comfortable and they’re out there making plays.”

Nearing the end of the regular season, Myrtle Beach will have a week off before playing its regular season finale against Wilson on Oct. 27. The Seahawks have already clinched a playoff spot, but still have a chance to win the region with some help.

“I think the most important thing, we talk about all the time, as we get closer to the playoffs our goal is to be playing our best football,” Wilson said. “I feel like we’re getting close, we’ve really cut out the mistakes and turnovers as of late. We’ve got to continue to do that.”

Turning point

It didn’t take long for Myrtle Beach to jump on Marlboro County, with Jermani Green scoring a rushing touchdown three minutes into the game. The Seahawk special teams then partially blocked a punt, leading to another Green rushing score. A defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery made the game 21-0 in favor of Myrtle Beach before Marlboro County could respond, which came as too little, too late.

Key performers

Jermani Green: On senior night, the junior stole the show with four first half touchdowns and over 100 yards rushing.

Lawson Cribb: In his final regular-season home game, Cribb made running the show for Myrtle Beach look easy, rolling up three touchdowns on the night.

Myrtle Beach defense: Scoring twice on the night wasn’t enough for the Myrtle Beach defense, which pummeled the Marlboro County offense all night, causing quarterback pressures and negative rushes.

They said it

“I’m really proud of Lawson (Cribb, quarterback); he really struggled early in the year with some injuries. I’m glad to see him back healthy and really being a great leader for us and making some big time throws.” Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson

“We just have to keep this mindset that what we’ve done so far doesn’t matter. We haven’t come close to what we want to get done this year, so we have to keep working hard in practice and play hard in the game.” Jermani Green, Myrtle Beach running back and linebacker
