Green Sea Floyds takes early jab before responding with knockout of Military Magnet
It didn’t take long for Green Sea Floyds to turn Friday night’s football game into a track meet, defeating Military Magnet 61-3 on homecoming.
The Trojans (2-2) struggled out of the gate against an athletic Military Magnet (0-4) team, but found an answer in senior Shaquille Johnson, who scored five touchdowns in the second quarter to give Green Sea Floyds a dominant victory.
“We talked all week about how we would have to take a shot from (Military Magnet),” said Green Sea Floyds coach Donnie Kiefer. “That’s a very athletic bunch, they came out and went on a great drive and kicked a field goal. At that point, I thought ‘Yep, here we go; this is going to be a dogfight.’ But, we were able to play some good defense and our offense kind of wore them down throughout the game.”
While Kiefer’s team went down early, it responded in a big way, taking an 8-3 lead into the second quarter, where Johnson took over. The senior do-it-all player had 112 receiving yards on three catches – each going for a touchdown. He also scored two rushing touchdowns, played defense and kicked off after each of his scores.
“When I get the ball in my hands, I feel like I can do something special,” Johnson said. “My teammates put me in a good spot to make plays (in the second quarter) and I was able to step up and make them. Whatever I need to do to help get the win, I’m going to do it.”
Green Sea Floyds kept up the pressure on Military Magnet, while playing a lot of younger players.
“Our defense played lights out tonight,” Kiefer said. “After that first drive where they scored and another drive in the first half, we didn’t allow them to move the ball the way they like to. In a game like this one, you’ve got to give the defense credit for staying after it.”
While addressing his team, Kiefer gave his offensive line credit for the point total, saying that the ability to run the ball and impose their will on the defense led to the staggering point total.
Turning point
As the first quarter ended, Green Sea Floyds led Military Magnet only 8-3, but Shaquille Johnson and the Trojan offense put up five touchdowns to take a 42-3 halftime lead. The senior wide receiver hauled in three touchdowns through the air and added two on the ground to have a quarter for the ages.
Key performers
Shaquille Johnson: A big-play threat all season, Johnson exploded for more than 100 receiving yards and five total touchdowns.
Shaquan Gillard: The running back had a touchdown on the ground to get the Trojan offense started and broke a few more long runs, leading to touchdowns.
Cova Ferris: Leading the charge for the Trojan defense, Ferris helped to wreak havoc on the Military Magnet backfield, causing a fumble on the night.

They said it
“We were able to throw the ball around a little bit more than we have been; we just executed a little bit better than we have so far this year.” – Green Sea Floyds head coach Donnie Kiefer
“My mindset was to do everything I could do to help my team score some points. I’m not going to put myself above the team, I can’t get too happy about this, I’ve got to come out and do it again next week.” Shaquille Johnson, Green Sea Floyds wide receiver
“I told my guys that there aren’t any moral victories and that winning is way more fun than losing. We played Loris tough last week, but didn’t finish the game off the way we wanted. I’ll take a win over a loss any day and we were able to get the win tonight.” Kiefer
