Carvers Bay and Andrews light up the scoreboard in turnover-filled game
Shootouts aren’t in Carvers Bay’s nature, but a rash of turnovers contributed to a lot of scoring and the Bears scored the final two touchdowns of the game to pull away from Andrews for a 47-28 win in the Region 7-2A opener for both teams.
Bears senior quarterback Janaz Sumpter rushed for four touchdowns and added one passing, while rushing for 104 yards on 15 carries and completing 12 of 17 passes for 108 yards, with all of the passing yards coming in the first half.
“I had to do it for my team,” Sumpter said. “Everybody said Andrews was supposed to win but I had to prove everybody wrong. I was feeling it. I told my coaches, ‘Just give me the ball and let me feed my wide receivers.’ Our linemen were doing a good job blocking so we’ve got to give credit for them. I just worked hard and had to get it right for my teammates.”
Carvers Bay (4-1) had 391 yards of offense while Andrews (3-2) had 290, including 102 yards rushing and a touchdown from Michael Pipkin.
The teams combined for seven turnovers, with each having a run of mistakes. Andrews lost four fumbles, including two on successive plays in the second quarter on handoff or snap exchanges.
“You can’t beat anybody turning the ball over four times,” Andrews coach Scott Durham said. “That’s all it comes down to. We’ve got to learn to take care of the football.”
Carvers Bay turned the ball over on its first two possessions of the second half on a fumble and interception and failed to get a punt off on a dropped snap on its third, contributing to two Andrews scores that pulled the Yellow Jackets within five points. The Bears also contributed to an Andrews scoring drive in the second quarter with 15-yard penalties on fourth downs.
“You get a lead and you get lax, and that kind of stuff will beat you,” Bears coach Nate Thompson said. “But our kids picked it up and scored and scored again and put it out of reach. Offensively I think we clicked but we fumbled. We have to work on that.”
Turning point
Carvers Bay scored two touchdowns in the final 1:01 of the first half to complete a 26-point second quarter and take a 33-14 lead. Sumpter hit Tyrik Reed for a 17-yard score and Carvers Bay forced a punt with 36 seconds remaining, on which Reed made a dazzling 48-yard return, catching the ball down the left sideline and cutting across the field before being tackled at the Andrews 7. Sumpter scored on a 1-yard run with 6 seconds remaining in the half and the Bears out of timeouts.

They said it
“Defensively we had a lot of miscues. Our kids need to learn how to play good technique, and they kind of got away from it tonight. When you’re home and your mom and dad are here you try to be the hero and you end up being the goat.” - Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson
“We learned from our mistake last week. We went in with a big head and came out with a loss.” - Carvers Bay quarterback Janaz Sumpter
“We moved the ball up and down the field. We didn’t stop them, but you know, they’re pretty good on offense and we don’t tackle very well right now. We’ve got to figure out a way to start getting some people on the ground. You take away [turnovers], it’s a dead even game in the second half and the same thing in the first half probably if we can just hang onto the ball. We figured it would be a game down to the wire.” - Andrews coach Scott Durham
