Myrtle Beach-South Pointe quarter-by-quarter breakdown
First quarter
Key moment | Myrtle Beach seemed to catch a break when junior Kerry Chestnut blocked South Pointe's punt as the Seahawks took possession at the Stallions' 8. But on the very next play, quarterback Everett Golson was intercepted in the end zone by junior Tay Hicklin.
The man | South Pointe defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound senior wasted no time showing why he is so coveted by some of college football's elite programs. On the first play from scrimmage, Clowney plowed through the line and sacked Golson for a 12-yard loss back to the Seahawks' 14. That seemed to set the tone defensively for the Stallions, who continued to push Myrtle Beach backward on that opening possession until a high snap on fourth-and-long from the 2 went out of the end zone for a safety.
Second quarter
Key moment | As soon as Myrtle Beach took its first lead of the game early in the second quarter, South Pointe came right back with a go-ahead touchdown of its own. Sophomore Devin Pearson hit junior running back JaRyan Jennings coming out of the backfield for a 4-yard touchdown pass on fourth down as the Stallions went back ahead 9-7.
The man | Pearson. The South Pointe quarterback set up that go-ahead score with a 75-yard run down the middle of the field, and he would set up the Stallions' next touchdown as well with a 24-yard run to the Myrtle Beach 5. Jennings scored two plays later as South Pointe stretched its lead to 16-7 with 4:13 left in the half. After being held to -1 rushing yard in the opening period, Pearson rushed for 114 in the second quarter.
Third quarter
Key moment | Myrtle Beach negated a key defensive stop midway through the quarter when it was flagged for roughing the punter as two Seahawks players collided with South Pointe's Landon Ard. With that, the Stallions moved across midfield and took over at the Myrtle Beach 36. They eventually scored on a perfectly timed 21-yard touchdown pass down the seam from Pearson to junior Montay Crockett as they stretched their lead 23-14 with 3:02 left in the quarter.
The man | Myrtle Beach receiver Jaquan Wilson. The Seahawks struck first in the second half as Golson fired a quick screen pass to Wilson, who took it the rest of the way for a 28-yard touchdown completion. The Seahawks had stacked the left side of the field to set up the play - and the much-needed score. With that, Myrtle Beach had cut its deficit to 16-14 with 9:06 remaining in the third quarter.
Fourth quarter
Key moment | Myrtle Beach senior DeVante Simmons sacked Pearson on third-and-five from deep in South Pointe territory, hitting the Stallions' quarterback as he got ready to throw. Pearson lost the football, and sophomore Octavius Thomas recovered the fumble as the Seahawks took over at the South Pointe 24. They would score three plays later to retake the lead.
The man | Golson. The Seahawks' standout senior quarterback was not at his best Saturday night - except when it mattered the most. On third down from the South Pointe 20-yard line, Golson fired a perfect touchdown pass to the front left corner of the end zone, dropping the ball over a defender and into the hands of senior Dallas Goodman as Myrtle Beach surged back ahead, 27-23, with 6:48 left in the game.
