Several streaks bite the dust on football playoffs’ opening weekend

Green Sea Floyds head coach Tony Sullivan described it as “a monkey was off” he and his team’s back.

Chuck Jordan of Conway barely paid it any mind.

Regardless how much weight area coaches tend to put on wins and losses — particularly those in the postseason — the satisfaction of advancing to the next week is enough to make them smile.

Especially when the playoffs have not proven so kind of late to their squads.

Take Green Sea Floyds, for example. Last Friday night’s victory over Military Magnet marked the program’s first victory in postseason play since 2003, a 24-21 win over Cross.

“It’s what you play for, opportunities to win playoff games,” Sullivan said. “It’s an amazing feeling.”

The Trojans were not alone in breaking their own dubious playoff streaks.

A fourth quarter touchdown pass and a pair of defensive stands late allowed Conway to escape with a 36-33 win over Goose Creek, allowing the Tigers to claim their first postseason win since 2008. Though much more recent, Carvers Bay and North Myrtle Beach each returned to the playoff win column for the first time since 2013.

Of the Grand Strand’s participants to move on to the second round, could anyone have guessed the one with the most recent run of success is … Georgetown? Continuing to build a foundation for what it hopes to be a future of success, the Bulldogs won a playoff game for the third consecutive season — the first time such has occurred in program history.

A pair of the area’s most revered playoff streaks also bit the dust on Friday.

Myrtle Beach’s loss to A.C. Flora not only shocked high school football fans statewide, but brought the Seahawks’ string of 12 first round playoff wins to an end. Loris also saw its streak of consecutive wins in a playoff opener end at four.

One streak that happened to remain intact, however, was a Carolina Forest stretch between playoff wins, which now is at 12. The Panthers’ last playoff win came in 2004, a 35-28 win over Strom Thurmond in the Class 3A playoffs.
