Georgetown goes toe-to-toe with power Dillon before falling short

It’s not often that a losing team’s effort can be called impressive.

For Georgetown, this week was one of those rare times.

The Bulldogs went toe-to-toe with perennial state power Dillon – having a lead in the third quarter and staying within 7 points of the Wildcats until late in the fourth – on Friday night before losing 36-22.

“It’s a whole lot of positives. We made some mistakes, but we’re finally buying in to giving great effort. That’s always been a concern of mine, and I think our kids are buying in,” Georgetown coach Ken Cribb said. “And I told our kids that’s big-boy football out there tonight. We came up a little bit short, but we’ve just got to learn how to play in those games. Probably the biggest difference in that game is that they’ve been in big games before and we haven’t. We’ve just got to take that next step to learn how to win them.”

The Bulldogs took a 15-14 in the third quarter and extended it 22-15 later in the frame.

However, Dillon tied the game up, took a 29-22 lead and then put the game away late in the fourth quarter when Georgetown turned the ball over inside their own 5 on an errant snap.

“I’m proud of them for giving some pretty good effort. Like I said, we’ve just got to learn from it and maybe next time we get in a big situation we’ll learn how to handle it and we can make those clutch plays at the right time,” Cribb said. “But one thing for sure is we can’t sit around and feel sorry for ourselves next week, and that’s exactly what I told the kids. We can’t afford to have a hangover. It’s a must win next week against a county rival (Waccamaw).”

Tony Lara scored a first-quarter touchdown on a 15-yard run before leaving the game with an injury, Deakidd Anderson hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from Tyler McAlister and Shamond Holmes provided a touchdown on a 12-yard run to pace the Bulldogs’ offense.

In addition to Lara, Cribb said one of his cornerbacks left the game with an injury.

“We played really good run defense, I thought. We held them 101 yards rushing,” Cribb said. “Offensively, we were able to run the football a little bit and mix in the pass and move it. We had our chances, but again, we just made some mistakes at the wrong time and some injuries hurt us.”

Sitting at 1-1 in Region VI-3A, Georgetown will next get set for a game at region rival Waccamaw (0-2) on Friday.

“We have already talked about it. We’ve got 24 hours – good or bad, we flush it after 24 hours. I told them we can’t let this loss turn into two losses. We’re done with Dillon, and Waccamaw’s going to give us their best shot,” Cribb said. “It’s a rivalry. They’re 10 miles down the road and that’s a must win for Georgetown High School and we’ve got to get our kids prepared and ready to go.”
