Stars get going late, Mustang rallies past Myrtle Beach
Mustang (Okla.) struggled with two of its best players not clicking.
When Jakolby Long and Curtis Haywood got going, it was a different story. Fueled by 29 second-half points between them, the Broncos overcame a nine-point deficit to defeat Myrtle Beach 74-66 in the consolation bracket.
For the Seahawks, who lost their fifth straight Beach Ball game, it was - if nothing else - a better showing than their blowout loss against nationally ranked Mater Dei from the night before.
“You don’t really have a night off,” Myrtle Beach coach Craig Martin said. “… We were still overmatched size-wise. But it was a little different than it was against Mater Dei. I thought we competed pretty hard.”
Myrtle Beach finished the first half on a 15-5 run and didn’t trail in the second half until there was five minutes to play. By that point, Long and Haywood had started to come on. Long, committed to Iowa State, finished with 23 points. Haywood had 20. With many of those coming after halftime, Mustang was able to outscore the Seahawks by 16 points in the final 16 minutes.
Myrtle Beach had three players finish in double figures with Bryce Schneider and Robert Swanson scoring 17 each and Adam Zam adding 16.
