Inside Day 1 at the Beach Ball Classic
Scoring machine: St. Francis (Ga.) senior 6-6 point guard Kobi Simmons displayed why he’s the most coveted point guard in the class of 2016 with 28 points, showing his well-rounded game with four 3-pointers, a pair of dunks, some driving buckets and eight free throws.
Highlight reel: Simmons rattled the rim with consecutive alley-oop dunks late in his team’s 73-56 win over Poca (W.Va.). He threw down a two-hander off the baseline that was followed about 15 seconds later with a dunk off a pass off the backboard.
Number crunching: Montverde (Fla.) showed its high-flying abilities with 13 dunks en route to a dominant win over Socastee. Simi Shittu had a game-high five dunks and Silvio De Sousa had four for the Eagles.
Game of the Day: There were no scintillating finishes on opening night, and the most contested game pitted St. Francis (Ga.) against Poca (W.Va.). Poca cut a 23-point deficit to 10 by halftime and was within nine in the second half before falling 73-56.
On the Horizon: The always exciting 3-point and dunk contests will take place Sunday, starting at 7 p.m. Seton Hall will take on the Moeller (Ohio)-Mullins winner in the tournament’s first quarterfinal game beforehand at 5:15 p.m.
