Beach Ball Classic

Inside day 4 at the Beach Ball Classic

Scoring machine | With a game to go, Franklin (Ohio) senior Luke Kennard isn’t just going to break the Beach Ball Classic’s four-game scoring record, he’s going to shatter it. Kennard finished his team’s third game of the tournament with 39 points, boosting his total to 130 for the week. Kennard, who scored a tournament single-game record 52 points against Mullins on Friday, has already eclipsed previous record holder Nick Emery, who scored 119 points for Lone Peak (Utah) in 2011.

Number crunching | Although it came in a loss, Hough’s Luke Maye extended his streak of double-doubles to 13 straight games overall (dating back to last season) and six consecutive games in the Beach Ball Classic. Maye, a North Carolina signee, finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds against Franklin.

Highlight reel | Having already scored 33 points in a loss to Northland (Ohio), Mullins sophomore and North Carolina commitment Jalek Felton shoveled a whip-around pass to teammate Justin Harley, who finished off the play with a wide-open layup. The pass from Felton was arguably his most impressive play of the afternoon, despite all his scoring.

Game of the day | Spring Valley’s 75-70 consolation bracket victory over St. Edward (Ohio) was actually a one-possession game until the Vikings’ top two players (P.J. Dozier and Malik Dunbar) combined to go 3-of-4 from the line in the final two seconds. The win sent Spring Valley into Wednesday’s fifth-place game.

On the horizon | The finals of the 34th annual Beach Ball Classic will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Franklin (Ohio) will take on 2009 tournament champion Bishop Gorman (Nev.).
