Inside Day 3 of the Beach Ball Classic
Scoring machine | St. Francis (Ga.) senior and Florida State signee Malik Beasley scored 33 points in the opening game of the day, a victory over North Little Rock (Ark.). Beasley was 14-of-16 from the field. He was eventually surpassed later in the day by Franklin (Ohio) senior Luke Kennard, who dropped 39.
Number crunching | Scott County (Ky.) showed off some impressive defensive numbers in its consolation-bracket win over Socastee. The Cardinals won 71-33, forcing 31 Braves turnovers and holding Socastee to just 31.9 percent from the floor.
Highlight reel | With a little more than 6 minutes to play in a loss to Franklin (Ohio), St. Edward (Ohio) guard Sean Flannery stole an errant pass at the free throw line, took two dribbles and dished off a behind-the-back pass in traffic to teammate Kipper Nichols. Nichols converted the semi-open lay-up, pulling Eagles to within single digits.
Game of the day | Despite trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, St. Edward came nearly all the way back against fellow Ohio program Franklin before eventually falling 76-73 when a 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed the mark.
On the horizon | The tournament semifinals will tip off Tuesday. Included in the pair of games is Hough (N.C.) against Franklin (Ohio). It will feature two of this year’s top individuals, North Carolina signee Luke Maye of Hough taking on Franklin’s Luke Kennard, a future Duke Blue Devil.
