Aynor girls golf team opens season with victory over North Myrtle Beach
Patrick Wilkinson has a fairly young squad, but – after Wednesday’s season-opening win over North Myrtle Beach at Diamondback Golf Course – he’s feeling good about its chances this season.
“We’re very inexperienced. We lost two players; one graduated and one transferred out of the school district,” Wilkinson said. “Everyone else is basically new and we’re learning and going to get better as the season goes on.”
Mary Kate Richardson earned medalist honors with a 4-over 40 to lead the Blue Jackets to victory. Rachael Wilkinson shot a 52, while Erin McCracken posted a 56 and Lizzie Hardee had a 57 for Aynor.
“I would say Mary Kate Richardson’s 40 was a good score,” Wilkinson said. “Maddie and Lizzie Hardee have played well the last few years and have picked their game up and I’m impressed with how they’ve come around.”
North Myrtle Beach, meanwhile, was led by Gabby Spoone’s 11-over 47 and Brianna Joyner was the second-highest finisher with a score of 60. The Chiefs travel to River Oaks to take on Carolina Forest next Thursday.
The Blue Jackets will take on West Florence and South Florence on Thursday, and Wilkinson hopes it’s another indicator of what’s to come.
“We’ve got some people stepping,” he said. “We’re going to be good.”
