Waccamaw heads up solid local finish in SCAAA Director’s Cup standings
Five Grand Strand high schools finished in the top 10 in their class in the S.C. Athletic Administrators Association Director’s Cup.
The awards, presented to athletics departments as a whole, register finishes across the board in all sports in respect to postseason finish.
Waccamaw finished with the best result among local programs, finishing second in Class AA. It is the highest a school from the Grand Strand has ever finished.
Aynor was also recognized in that division, finishing fifth.
Myrtle Beach was fourth in Class AAA, with St. James not far behind in a tie for sixth. Carvers Bay wrapped up the area’s contingent, finishing sixth in Class A.
No local Class AAAA schools made the top 10.
Wando (Class AAAA), Hilton Head (AAA), Bishop England (AA) and St. Joseph’s (A) took home the top individual spots in each division. Each of those school have earned their respective classification’s trophy for the last three years, with Bishop England winning it each year it has been awarded beginning in 2003.
COLLEGE SIGNING
Waccamaw golfer Will Canipe signed with USC Beaufort during a ceremony at the school over the weekend.
Canipe was a North-South All-Star selection this year after helping the Warriors to the Class AA state championship. In that two-day tournament, he finished third individually after an 11th place finish as junior.
NORTH-SOUTH ALL-STAR SOCCER
Two Myrtle Beach boys soccer players will be heading to Rock Hill this week to participate in the S.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association North-South All-Star game.
Myrtle Beach’s Adolfo Aguilar and Foster Russell were each selected for the game, which included 36 of the top seniors in the state for the boys and girls events. Aguilar, a forward scored 24 goals and added 12 assists for the Seahawks this spring. Russell, a midfielder, started all 27 matches and tallied 13 goals and nine assists.
Myrtle Beach advanced to the Class AAA soccer finals for the fourth time in state history before falling to Chapin in the title game.
The boys game started in 1989, with the North squad leading the series 15-9-3. The girls game started eight years later, with the South leading 9-7-3 in that time.
No local girls players were selected for North-South this year, although Waccamaw’s Jessica Preedom was the lone area pick for the Clash of the Carolinas All-Star games. Those will be played July 9 in Raleigh.
