▪ Waccamaw 10, (at) Marion 0 | Waccamaw’s Levi Almond may have simply set out to provide a solid pitching performance for his baseball team, but the Warriors hurler nearly was able to offer something much more special on Friday night.
Almond came three outs from posting a perfect game at Marion, a double in the seventh inning breaking things up for the Waccamaw pitcher. Nevertheless, his effort helped his team remain in the hunt for the Region VIII-AA title, the Warriors grabbing a 10-0 win.
The Waccamaw pitcher had 17 strikeouts in the game, and did not offer a free pass to a Marion hitter.
“We were all hoping and rooting for the perfect game, it would have been special for him and all of us to be a part of,” said Waccamaw baseball coach Jeff Gregory. “But I’m more than happy with how (Almond) threw (Friday night). Our guys just had more of a business-like approach, as we just sat back and let the kid throw.”
Almond also was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Connor Eckard and Alex Altman also provided perfect nights at the dish, each of them with three hits.
