▪ (At) St. James 14, West Brunswick 1 | Austin McCutchen has been showing flashes of brilliance for the Sharks.
With five goals and two assists, the senior led St. James – a second-year program – to a lopsided win over the Trojans to improve to 5-3.
“He is our team captain and an good all-around kid,” Sharks coach Joe Grega said. “And he’s a heck of a player.”
The Sharks got out to a hefty lead with the help of McCutchen and Thomas Atchison – who had three goals and one assist – and they never looked back. Montez Wilson won nine of 12 faceoffs, and Thomas Atchison and Josh Marlow had a team-high six groundballs to lead St. James.
“It was [dominant],” Grega said. “We played well and worked hard and did all of the little things we were supposed to do.”

▪ (At) Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 6, Coastal Christian 0 | The Saints got out to a hefty lead and never looked back en route to a win over Coastal Christian. Bennett Pearson had four goals and Jackson Corbett and Ian McCauley added one goal apiece, while Andrew Smith had the game’s only assist for Christian Academy (4-1).
“I was very happy with the play tonight. We moved the ball around well and played an unselfish game; it was probably one of the best team games that we played,” Saints coach Jim Marcin said. “We’re a young team but we’re gelling and working on some fundamentals. We’re looking forward to seeing what we can do.”
The Saints have got off to a strong start this season, but they don’t hit the field again until April 7 as Christian Academy travels to take on Trinity-Byrnes. Marcin isn’t worried about the break and looks at it as a good time to bond more and keep improving at practice.
“We won two early games in PKs, which I think fueled some confidence in the boys and, in doing that, proved we can play as a team,” he said. “We’ve started trusting one another. Once the trust was there, we really started gelling.”
And Marcin and the Saints are shooting for the stars.
“As a coach, you want to set the bar high,” he said. “Our expectation is to make playoffs and hopefully make a run. You never know how that ball will bounce and, if we stay healthy, we can compete. We’ll be very competitive.”
