High school roundup (Feb. 20, 2016)

Twenty area wrestlers from Class AAA will have the chance to compete for an individual state title.

St. James and Myrtle Beach are the two most represented schools with seven qualifiers each, North Myrtle Beach has five qualifiers and Georgetown has one that will compete in the Class AAA individual state tournament in Anderson next weekend after the qualifier event Saturday at St. James High School.

St. James was the only school with a champion, as seniors Michael Mewhorter (145 pounds) and Aaron Foster (285 pounds) took home first place in their respective weight classes. Tyler Wiggins (126 pounds) placed second, while Chase Smith (113 pounds), Brandon Ellis (138 pounds) and Spencer Deegan (195 pounds) finished third, and Mackenzy Cange (160 pounds) was fourth.

Myrtle Beach’s Stephen Desjardins (182 pounds) and Daniel Mitchell (195 pounds) each finished second, while Edward Rivers (170 pounds) and Pedro Reyes (220 pounds) were third. The Seahawks’ Reese Woods (138 pounds), Ezra Flowers (145 pounds) and Jacob Cisco (285 pounds) all placed fourth.

North Myrtle Beach’s Brandon Reisen (120 pounds), Codie Aube (126 pounds), Brennan Michael (145 pounds), and Rashaan Vereen (152 pounds) all finished third in their respective classes, and Curtis Wolfe (170 pounds) was fourth.

Georgetown’s Jordan Manigault (160 pounds) finished third and was the only qualifier for the school.

Boys basketball

The Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys basketball team opened the SCISA Class AA state playoffs in winning fashion, taking down Calhoun Academy 50-33 Saturday to advance to the second round.

Sophomore Robert Guyton had a team-high 16 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals, Bernard Jones added eight points, six rebounds and two assists and Jaylen Johnson scored nine and had three rebounds, three steals and three assists for the Saints, who trailed 11-8 after the first quarter.

Christian Academy turned up the heat in the second quarter, outscoring Calhoun Academy 22-3 and the Saints never looked back. Jalen Matthews added six points, seven rebounds and two steals, and Michael Green had five points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in the Saints’ win.

Christian Academy will play Spartanburg Christian in the second round Tuesday.
