Girls basketball

▪ Socastee 41, (at) Summerville 37 | Down four points with about two minutes to go, the Braves rallied to beat the Green Wave in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs.

“Thrilled,” Socastee coach Ginger Ford said of escaping with a win. “The gym was loud and Summerville has a great girls basketball reputation. [Our girls] played hard and knew what they wanted to do. … We fought real hard in the end. It seemed like we wanted to win this game worse than we’ve wanted to win a basketball game this year. It was a tough win. It’s good because that made us understand that we can go on the road and win in a hostile environment.”

The Braves connected on 12 of 16 free throws, including several down the stretch to close out a close game.

Kira Bell had a game-high 13 points, including a three-point play that allowed Socastee to pull within one point with under two minutes left. Amber Rutledge, who had nine points, and Shayla Baldwin, who added eight, also made key plays down the stretch for the Braves.

While her team made the most of going to the charity stripe, Ford lauded her team for keeping the Green Wave from getting to the line.

“I thought we played really tough defense and never really put Summerville in the one-and-one,” Ford said.
