High school roundup (Feb. 2, 2016)
Hard work continues to pay off for Nia Sumpter and the Myrtle Beach girls basketball team.
And neither is close to being done.
Sumpter – a mainstay for the Seahawks girls basketball team – surpassed 1,000 career points as she scored 28 in Myrtle Beach’s 71-18 home victory Tuesday over Lake City.
“It was a big night for her to reach 1,000,” Seahawks coach Jennifer Dennison said. “She has been a big-time player for us over the years.”
Sumpter has consistently got it done for Myrtle Beach this season, averaging 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and helping her team to an 18-4 overall record. She also had 12 rebounds Tuesday.
“She is always hungry,” Dennison said of Sumpter. “She plays hard on both the defensive and offensive end and gives everything she has. Every night when she steps on the court, she is ready to play basketball.”
Seahawks point guard Keocia Walker had a double-double of 10 assists and 10 steals to go along with six points Tuesday as she has been working her way back from a hand injury.
Myrtle Beach will look to keep things going as it travels to take on St. James at 6 p.m. Friday.
“Nobody is going give us anything,” Dennison said. “We have to keep working hard.”

▪ St. James 59, (at) Georgetown 35 | Sharks senior forward Bethany Goodrich returned Tuesday after missing four games with a knee injury.
Goodrich injured her knee in a win over the Bulldogs on Jan. 15, and scored eight points in St. James’ win over Georgetown on Tuesday.
“It’s hard to lose a 10-point, 10-rebound (a game) player,” Sharks coach Stan Patterson said. “To gradually work her back in – especially now – is huge.”
St. James shut out the Bulldogs in the first quarter Tuesday, outscoring them 14-0. The Sharks entered halftime leading 27-8 and never looked back.
“I think we came out really focused and got off to a good start,” Patterson said. “We were able to carry that momentum throughout the ballgame.”
The Sharks improved to 5-2 in Region VII-AAA, and have a chance to tie region leader Myrtle Beach with a win as the two meet on Friday at 6 p.m. at St. James High School.
“We played them close up there last time,” Patterson said of the Seahawks. “Hopefully we come out ready to go and give them a ballgame. They are really good and we’ll have our work cut out for us.”

North Myrtle Beach fell to 7-14 overall and 3-4 in region play. The Chiefs will look to bounce back as they travel to Georgetown to take on the Bulldogs at 6 p.m. Friday.
“We just have to find ways to produce on offense,” North Myrtle Beach coach Jude Hunt said. “Tonight, I didn’t feel like we played terribly – the ball just didn’t fall in the basket. We missed some shots and, of course, we fell behind early and battled with them the rest of the game; we just didn’t do well early on.”

▪ (At) Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach 65, Pee Dee Academy 42 | On senior night, it took a while for the Saints to get going but they heated up before halftime and never slowed down en route to a win over the Eagles.
“It was one of those senior night things, we wanted to get seniors out there. We started out slow, but kicked it into gear to get a lead and we held on,” said Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach coach Darren Gore, whose team finished its SCISA Region III-AA slate at 8-0. “To recognize our seniors and to send them out on a winning note is always nice.”
Freshman Michael Green had 18 points to go along with four steals, three rebounds and three assists, and freshman Jalen Matthews had 17 points and 15 rebounds to pace the Saints. Seniors Bernard Jones (five points, five assists, eight rebounds), Ian McCauley (10 points) and Bennett Pearson were all honored Tuesday.
The Saints, who started the year 1-8, has won 11 of its last 13 games and will head into the SCISA Region III-AA tournament at Florence, which starts next Tuesday, with some momentum and a No. 1 seed.
Christian Academy had a contest scheduled with Hammond (20-1), which features UNC commit Seventh Woods – the No. 1 player (Class of 2016) in South Carolina, according to ESPN.com. However, that game won’t be played as the team is dealing with a plethora of injuries, including one to Woods and had to cancel.
“This wrapped up the region for us. We’ll be the No. 1 seed and we’re looking forward to state playoffs but I hate missing that one with Hammond,” Gore said. “We wanted to play a high-caliber team going into the playoffs because our region was a little down this year. I just hope our guys can continue to progress. We’ve had some really good practices and hopefully we’re prepared for whoever we’re going to play.”

▪ (At) Myrtle Beach 64, Lake City 62 | Jaquan Chestnut and Robert Swanson had 12 points apiece, and Bryce Schneider scored 10 to lead the Seahawks to a win over the Panthers in a Region VII-AAA game.
“We fought until the end,” Myrtle Beach coach Craig Martin said. “Lake City played hard and kept it close the whole game. But we had some kids come off the bench that did some good things with their defense, a couple of big 3-pointers and we kind of hung in there and did what we needed to do at the end.
“Chestnut made some big plays, Swanson made a big free throw and (Chris) Weston his some free throws that helped. It was a team effort.”
The Seahawks will travel to take on St. James at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a big Region VII-AAA contest.
