There may not be a more valuable player to a basketball coach than one who can succeed in multiple facets of the game. And when it comes to pulling off a regular double-double, there are only a handful of players on the Grand Strand who do it nearly every night out.

Only two area boys and three local girls are accomplishing the feat so far this year, and barring a huge numerical spike by someone else, it’s likely going to stay that way.

Loris’ Travis Walters and Conway’s Jimmy Nichols – the only two boys averaging in double figures in rebounding – have paired that with a respectable scoring clip of at least 11 points per game. For the girls, the double-double list includes Green Sea Floyds’ Quadasia Gillard, Carolina Forest’s Alexis Tomlin and North Myrtle Beach’s Aquera Johnson.

All three of the girls are likely to eclipse 300 total rebounds this year alone; Walters and Nichols are well on pace to top 200.

To be eligible for consideration, a player must have participated in 75 percent of his/her team’s games. All stats are provided to The Sun News by area coaches and cover games played through Saturday, Jan. 30.
