Green’s career night leads Christian Academy to win over Trinity-Byrnes
Christian Academy’s Michael Green chose the perfect night to play with the poise of a seasoned veteran.
The freshman guard poured in 35 points Thursday evening, leading the Saints to an 89-77 victory over Trinity-Byrnes in a matchup between two of SCISA Class AA’s top teams.
“Our defense really helps get our offense started,” said Christian Academy head basketball coach Darren Gore. “(Green) really was able to get into transition and was really aggressive in taking the ball to the hole. On four or five occasions, his aggressiveness helped him get the bucket and-1.”
The win was Christian Academy’s ninth in a row. Unlike most during the course of the team’s recent winning streak, very little came easy.
According to Gore, the game was played at a frantic pace, with both teams wanting to run the floor. Though having to make a bus ride of nearly two hours to Darlington, the Saints proved to have the fresher legs of the two teams, proving it in the second period by outscoring their opponents 28-15.
Being on the road, playing at their place and the kids there being crazy and loud, it was a good environment,” Gore said. “But our boys went in there and were ready to play. They stuck to the gameplan and played with great effort.”
In addition to scoring 35 points, Green pulled in eight rebounds, dished out six assists and nabbed two steals in the victory. Robert Guyton also had 16 points in the Christian Academy win, with Jaylen Johnson contributing 11 points and seven rebounds as well.
Leading Trinity-Byrnes with 17 points was La’Sauhn McFadden, with Lanmadrek Brown chipping in 15.
