Green Sea Floyds girls basketball falters against Latta

Just a day after taking down Lake View, the Green Sea Floyds girls basketball team couldn’t quite pull it out Wednesday as the Trojans fell to Latta 63-43 in a road game.

Green Sea Floyds trailed by just 4 at halftime, but Latta pulled away with a strong second-half attack, outscoring the Trojans 36-20 after the break.

“It was a good game,” Green Sea Floyds coach Tracy Kienast said. “Near the end of third, we actually pulled ahead but they just turned up their pressure on us and were able to pull away. We were down a few girls, but regardless, we couldn’t quite keep up with them at the end. We just couldn’t put the ball in the bucket, as evident by only scoring seven points in the fourth quarter.”

Latta senior TaKeria Legette stole the show as she hit seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points, and eighth grader Rianna Green added 12 for the Vikings.

Sophomore point guard Tamara Jackson put up a team-high 18 points, and senior forward Quadasia Gillard had 11 points to go along with 17 rebounds to pace the Trojans. But playing two games in a 24 hour span took it’s toll on Green Sea Floyds.

“That’s tough playing two days in a row,” Kienast said. “We’ll try to take it easy (at practice), rest our legs and get prepared.”

Kienast is hoping his squad will bounce back when it hosts Region VIII-A rival Carvers Bay, which also fell to Latta on Tuesday, at 6 p.m. Friday.

“Losing this one was tough, but the biggest thing is just getting our legs under us and pushing the girls to prepare for Friday,” he said. “We’ll see how it goes.”
