▪ (At) Socastee 47, West Florence 32 | The Braves held court Friday.

Now, they hope to keep it that way.

Shayla Baldwin had 18 points and eight rebounds and Haley Altman added four points and 10 rebounds as the Socastee girls basketball team defeated West Florence 47-32 on Friday to improve to 1-1 in Region VI-AAAA play.

“It was a very solid performance and the girls knew going into the game that this was about a must-win situation for them after the first region game,” Braves coach Ginger Ford said. “… I was a great effort. Everybody on the team scored.”

Socastee was a little slow out of the gate before dominating the second and third quarters en route to the win.

“We ha da few turnovers in the first quarter and it took us a few minutes to get into a solid rhythm,” Ford said. “By the second quarter we started playing together better.”

It was also important for the Braves to defend their home court after losing at Conway in the region opener Tuesday. Socastee will have back-to-back home region contests as it hosts South Florence on Tuesday.

“It’s gonna be really important,” Ford said of protecting their home court. “After that first loss at Conway we impressed upon the team that we need to play with a sense of urgency and take one region game at a time, and I think that’s what we’ll do Tuesday at home.”

▪ Christian Academy 54, (at) Florence Christian School 39 | Setting the tone on both ends of the floor, Christian Academy was able to remain undefeated in SCISA Region III-AA with a victory over Florence Christian.

Hitting three 3-pointers in the opening minutes, Michael Green and the Saints were able to quickly apply pressure to their opponents. Christian Academy displayed similar effort and tenacity on the other end of the floor, limiting a prolific Florence Christian squad to 14 first-half points, much to the delight of head coach Darren Gore.

“I couldn’t be happier with how we came out,” he said. “We wanted to come out and make our presence known on the defensive end. (Green) coming out and hitting three (3-pointers), and holding a great team to 14 points in the first half, we showed a lot of effort and was able to leave with what we wanted.”

Green led the way for Christian Academy with 15 points, while Robert Guyton had nine in a winning effort. Also contributing for the Saints was Jay Williams and Bernard Jones — who scored his 1,000th career point in the win — with eight points apiece.

Florence Christian School was led by Jacob Lewis, who had a game-high 19 points.
