High school roundup (Jan. 12, 2016)
Green Sea Floyds caught the Hemingway girls basketball team in a trap.
And the Trojans kept the Tigers there for the length of Tuesday’s contest.
Tamara Jackson took advantage of the frenetic pace Tuesday, scoring a season-high 32 points to go along with five steals as Green Sea Floyds took down Hemingway 52-39 in its Region VIII-A opener.
“We ran a trap instead of a press. We weren’t trying to get a lot of shots on offense; the pressure just worked real well,” Trojans coach Tracy Kienast said. “Half of [Jackson’s] points came out of running the trap or her getting a steal and getting layups.”
Green Sea Floyds built a seven-point lead at halftime, but came on strong after the break. The Trojans outscored the Tigers 16-7 in the third quarter and held on for the victory.
Quadasia Gillard chipped in six points and 12 rebounds, and Paige McDaniels scored nine for Green Sea Floyds.
“We had the ball right off the bat. We scored right away and then we were able to get [back] in the trap and sat there most of the night,” Kienast said. “We were able to get turnovers and keep that edge. We were able to take it from a 6-point game to a 15-point lead and just sat back in that trap, playing patient on offense and defense. We tried our best to keep their shots to a minimum.”
With the win, the Trojans open region play with a 1-0 record and will look to keep things going in a tough meeting with Carvers Bay at 6 p.m. Thursday.
“It’s nice to start 1-0 in the region,” Kienast said. “We were unable to do it last year, so it’s a nice step for us. We’re focused on what’s right in front of us, though. We were focused [on Hemingway] earlier this week, and we’ll shift our focus to the next one. Carvers Bay will be just as tough. But we’re one game down and we’ll enjoy this one, but we’ll be right back to work, getting ready for the next one. We’ll do our best to win another region game Thursday.”
