High school roundup (Jan. 5, 2016)
Darren Gore is thinking long term in the early stages of region play.
He hopes it pays off when it matters.
After having his Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach boys team play a challenging non-region schedule, Gore is trying to build depth as SCISA Region VII-AA play heats up.
“We kind of front-loaded our schedule because I didn’t know the region was going to shape up,” Gore said after Tuesday’s 67-33 win at Pee Dee Academy. “Fortunately, we were able to play a lot guys who don’t get a lot of playing time tonight. Those guys have worked hard in practice. Our starters did what they supposed to do. It was good to see everybody contribute.”
The Saints’ bench chipped in 29 points Tuesday.
“They’re showing they can play some,” Gore said. “I’m excited about how they’re growing and how we’re improving as a team.”
Gore believes getting experienced depth will be a plus once more is on the line.
“They all play really, really good defense. That’s something I’ve told them, that the better defense they play, the better chance they’ll have to play,” Gore said. “It will hopefully pay off when we’re down the home stretch getting into region play and hopefully in the playoffs. Gaining confidence and experience is going to help us.”

▪ (At) Green Sea Floyds 51, Loris 38 | The Trojans hit the court Tuesday after a long layoff due to the holidays.
In Green Sea Floyds’ first game since a win over South Columbus on Dec. 16, Quadasia Gillard had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, and Tamara Jackson scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Trojans to a home win over the Lions.
“Well, we were coming off a nearly three week break and I was a little concerned with how tempo and effort would be,” Green Sea Floyds coach Tracy Kienast said. “But the girls came out fired up.”
The Trojans led 23-22 at halftime, but outscored the Lions 18-7 in the third quarter and held on for the victory. Jalinda Johnson chipped in six points for Green Sea Floyds (7-3).
“We hit the first couple of shots and just went on from there,” Kienast said. “The girls played great defensively all night. Loris hit a couple, but the girls settled down didn’t give them any easy shots and limited their second chance opportunities.”
The Trojans will host Aynor at 6 p.m. Friday, trying to keep their momentum going.

▪ Socastee 42, (at) Waccamaw 19 | Junior Shayla Baldwin had a game-high 15 points and eighth grader Jaelyn Anderson scored eight to lead the Braves to a win over the Warriors.
Socastee led 12-5 at halftime, and the Braves outscored the Warriors 30-14 in a dominant second-half effort.
“I thought we played really, really aggressive in the second half,” Socastee coach Ginger Ford said. “We kind of got off to slow start but had good floor leadership from [senior Mia] Angelo and [senior Amber] Rutledge from the guard spots.”
“So many nights Mia draws a box of [defenders] and has to play out of position a lot and did a good job tonight. Only scoring 4 points, she is stepping up as a senior to do whatever she needs to do for this team.”
The Braves look to keep things rolling as they travel to take on North Myrtle Beach at 6 p.m. Friday.
“It’s always tough to play at North Myrtle Beach,” Ford said. “I saw them play in the [Shootout by the Sea] tournament and they have really improved. … I expect a physical, well-coached game.”
